Posted on Monday, 06 October 2008 11:00AM by Editor
A worker at the Labasa Sugar Mill was crushed to death by a tractor loaded with sugar cane. 55 year old Hari Narayan, had just left his home at Tovata and was driving the tractor down a slope when he lost control.

Mr Narayan was thrown from the vehicle when it began to tumble and was crushed by the machine. Atunaisa Sokomuri, Police public relations officer for the region said "but we are alarmed that this is the second case within a fortnight, we are investigating the issues surrounding this case."

The first case referred to by Mr Sokomuri occurred on the 27th of last month when a logging company cook was killed when he was crushed underneath a bulldozer.

The road death toll now stands at 44 compared to 40 of the same period last year, highlighting the need for safety when working with plant machinery no matter how experienced the operator may be.
