Tories fund raising front 131

Watchdogs were called in over news that the Conservative party was utilising a fund raising "front" supported Sir Anthony Bamford, head of JCB. Questions were raised about the legality of using a fund raising "front", however watchdogs have ruled that everything occuring is perfectly legal.

The Tories are using Constituency Campaigning Services to generate millions of pounds to provide call centres and create leaflets and it has been found that this is well above board and perfectly legitimate. Sir Anthony bankrolls the offices of shadow foreign secretary William Hague, and his family have donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to the Tories.

He has supported the company, based at Coleshill Manor, near Birmingham, through the controversial Midlands Industrial Council. Labour had previously complained that the centre potentially breached electoral law.

After a two-year investigation, the commission has cleared the Tories of breaking legally binding spending limits by using the company to amass more than £1 million to help fight the 2005 General Election. The commission also said that they were satisfied that the firm charged proper commercial rates to the party's constituency branches for services.
