Stansted set to expand 131

Stansted Airport in Essex is due to expand, and the plans have been fully approved by the government.

Airport owner BAA want to push to increase passenger numbers from 25m to 35m a year and aim to increase the number of departing flights from 241,000 to 264,000.

BAA also submitted a planning application to construct a second runway at Stansted, this is due to go to a public inquiry next year.

If the plans to build a second runway is approved it could be built by a different owner, whilst the Competition Commission are still arguing that BAA should sell off Stansted to increase competition in the industry.

Environmentalists have campaigned against the expansion, arguing the extra flights at Stansted will have repercussions on the environment and contribute to global warming.
